The key steps to window restoration

Hiring me means you ge the benefit of extensive experience, refined skills, practised techniques, and professional tools, which collectively ensure a superior paint job that transforms spaces with precision and lasting quality.

Step one

Preparation

To establish a solid foundation for restoration preperation is key. During the preparation phase, I meticulously examine the windows to identify any areas exhibiting signs of rot, decay, or damage. Firstly, I employ a heat gun or sander to carefully remove old paint and finish from the wooden surfaces. For targeted removal of decayed or rotted wood, a Spherical head router with appropriate milling or grinding attachments is required. The affected wood is removed, ensuring a minimum depth of 5mm into the healthy wood, thus eradicating any compromised material. Maintaining the wood moisture percentage below 18% is crucial to success. Finally, to enhance the bonding process, the area is pre-treated with a hardener.

Step two

Epoxy Bonding

The epoxy bonding process is a pivotal step in the restoration. After mixing the two components of the epoxy a thin layer is applied to the pre-treated bonding area. By incrementally layering and shaping the epoxy resin using an application knife, I create a seamless integration with the existing wood. The bonding area requires a minimum depth of 5mm and a maximum depth of 10mm, ensuring structural integrity of the repair. For voids exceeding 10mm, custom-shaped wood is precisely cut and inserted to achieve a flawless restoration.

Step Three

Painting

Following the curing of the epoxy, a light sanding is required of the surface, ensuring a good key for the paint. A primer is initially applied, followed by a suitable undercoat, and culminating in a top coat. This build up of the paint system not only contributes to the aesthetic appeal but also bolsters the durability of the restoration, ensuring the renewed windows maintain their beauty and functionality over time.

Frequently Asked Questions about Window Restoration Service

Isn’t it cheaper to replace my windows rather than restore them?

While replacement might seem cheaper initially, restoration is often more cost-effective in the long run. Restoration preserves the character and value of your home, especially for historic properties. It’s also more environmentally friendly and can improve energy efficiency without sacrificing the original design.

How long does the window restoration process take?

The duration varies depending on the extent of the restoration needed, but typically, we can restore a single window within 1-3 days. For larger projects, we work efficiently to minimize disruption to your home or business. We’ll provide a detailed timeline during the initial consultation.

Will restored windows be as energy-efficient as new ones?

Yes, restored windows can be just as energy-efficient as new ones. Our restoration process includes weatherstripping, repairing or replacing damaged wood, and ensuring proper fit. We can also install interior storm windows for additional insulation. These measures significantly improve energy efficiency while maintaining the original aesthetic of your windows.

Is it worth restoring my windows if they’re very old or severely damaged?

Absolutely! Even severely damaged or very old windows can often be restored to their former glory. Our skilled craftsmen have extensive experience in reviving windows that others might consider beyond repair. Restoration not only preserves the historical integrity of your property but can also increase its value. We’ll assess your windows and provide honest recommendations on whether restoration is the best option.

My 4 step process to success

Meeting each other for an initial consultation is the first part of the process. When you book a consultation with me we discuss the following points;

  • Project requirements and goals
  • Colour preferences
  • Paint finishes
  • Project timeline
  • Questions or concerns you might have

Following these discussions, I take accurate measurements of all surfaces to help me gauge the precise quantity of paint required. This forms the basis for crafting a comprehensive cost estimate, incorporating labor, materials, paint, and any additional requirements.

Estimations are supplied by email and contain an itemised cost for each element of the job along with a discreiption of the work to be carried out.

Every sucessful job starts with the correct planning. These are some of the following points I take into consideration when planning your job;

  • Scheduling
  • Ordering and Procurement
  • Communication
  • Contingency Planning
  • Quality Control

In planning my painting projects, I prioritise a well-structured timeline to assure the job is carried off without a hitch. Procuring materials in advance ensures a seamless process. Transparent communication with you, a contingency plan for unexpected challenges, and vigilant quality control measures are important factors in delivering a successful outcome aligned with both mine and your expectations.

As any Deccy worth their salt knows preperation is half of the job. Here are the stages eah and every job I do goes through;

  • Surface Inspection and Preparation
  • Surface Cleaning
  • Protection and Masking
  • Pre-paint Treatment
  • Paint Application
  • Quality Checks
  • Clean Up

Carefull inspection and a keen eye allows me to prepare surfaces before fixing any flaws. Cleaning thoroughly and safeguarding the surroundings ensures everything is ready before painting. My focus on detail, application of multiple coats and regular quality checks all contribute to achieving a refined and long-lasting finish.

If you’re not 100% happy, neither am I. The only reason you know I have been should be by the work I have left behind. The clean-up and sign-off stage is critical in ensuring the completion of the project with me knowing everything is done to your satisfaction. The last few stages to go through are;

  • Removal of Protection
  • Cleaning Surfaces
  • Restoring the Space
  • Vacuuming and Sweeping
  • Client Walkthrough
  • Addressing Concerns
  • Touch-Ups and Corrections
  • Obtaining Sign-Off

These last parts of the process are just as key as the previous ones. Successfully ticking them off allows me to know you are happy with everything, which means I can walk away knowing I have done my job correctly and to a high standard.
